ASEAN-Russia Naval Exercise “ARNEX”




On December 1-3, 2021 the first ASEAN-Russia Naval Exercise “ARNEX” was held in Malacca Strait. It became an important event in the framework of strengthening strategic partnership between Russia and ASEAN launched in November 2018.

Navy ships from Russia, Indonesia, Brunei, Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore and Thailand participated in the event. Cambodia, Laos and the Philippines sent their observers – defense attaches accredited in Jakarta. The Pacific Fleet destroyer “Admiral Panteleyev” took part in the exercise from the Russian Side.

The objectives of the training were purely peaceful. The parties worked on improvement of interaction of fleets to ensure safety of maritime and economic activities as well as civil shipping, cooperation in the spheres of communication, maneuvering, search and rescue in the sea, inspection of vessels.

We appreciate the special contribution by Indonesia in holding the drills, which initially were scheduled for the year 2020 but were postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The Sides expressed interest in continuation of such trainings on a regular basis in the future.

On December 3 the crew of destroyer “Admiral Panteleyev” visited Aceh Province to hold a commemoration ceremony in the cemetery of Sabang (Weh island) at the grave of Sergey Khokhlov, a Russian sailor who died in a fatal accident on February 27, 1901 during the passage of the Russian Empire’s ship squadron from Kronstadt to the Pacific Ocean.
